Simon Mathurin Lantara
(Oncy 1729–1778 Paris) A classical landscape with the Expulsion of Hagar, signed and dated lower left: Simon Lantara 1763, oil on canvas, 74 x 101 cm, framed,
See E. Bellier de la Chavignerie, Recherches sur le peintre Lantara, Paris 1852; G. Levitine, Les origines du mythe de l’ artiste bohème en France: Lantara, in: Gazette des Beaux-Arts, 9, 1975, p. 4960. Lantara undertook his training in the decorative workshops at Versailles, before settling in Paris with a studio in the Rue Saint Denis. Even early on he was able to enjoy financial success as a landscape painter in the tradition of Claude Lorrain. A series of twelves views of the Parisian area were engraved by J. P. Le Bas, making him famous overnight. The Louvre holds several of his works, since the Royal Family also prized Lantara's paintings. The figural groups in his pictures were almost always painted by his friend, the artist, Claude Joseph Vernet. The figures in this painting are similar to those of Vernet's. Vernet portrayed Lantara in a sketch which still exists in the form of an engraving by Felix Braquemond.
